About the Book:
The enemy believes the battle is nearly over, but he’s just getting started.
Sector 17 has tried to silence the Ghost of Oz, but he doesn’t back down. Back on the hunt, Tyler Reid uncovers chilling truths that challenge everything he knows about his enemy and the woman who works for them. Caught between protecting a Russian heiress and the job she has to do, Tyler starts to question who he can rely on.
Alexandra “Alex” Romanova has been told who she is, but fragmented memories hint at a past she’s reluctant to reclaim—a past far darker than what she remembers. When Tyler offers her a chance to escape her cruel boss at Sector 17, the plight of young recruits being turned into killers weighs heavily on her conscience. She’s determined to give them the same freedom she’s found, but doesn’t realize that in doing so she has put them all at risk.
As the head of Sector 17 clings to power, Tyler and Alex are caught in the middle of a deadly war for lives, freedom, and revenge. With enemies closing in on all sides, they can’t save everyone. The stakes are higher than ever—there is no time to die.

I was excited to pick this one up when I first learned of the series a couple months ago, and am so that that I did! This epic sequel was everything I’d hoped for and was exactly what I needed right now! The action was spot-on, the twists, turns, and mystery were well done, and the characters were easily my favorite part! There’s a lot happening in this series, and this follow-up to the first book in the Dauntless Defenders series keeps going where the first left off. I definitely recommend reading these in order, especially as the series goes on.
The surprise twists and secret allegiances were a bit part of the story, and kept things interesting and the story moving forward as a good pace, even for being a somewhat longer story. The questions of morality, loyalty, ‘what’s next’, and who to trust were another fun aspect of this one, as each of the character seemed to reach a point in the story where they really had to consider some of the hard questions that they had been avoiding, and deciding for themselves if the end really does justifies the means, or if it just makes them as bad as the thing (or person) they are fighting against? It was interesting to see the different ways this reoccurring theme played into the story, and how faith affected the answer to the question providing a clearer direction and mission along the way.
I’ve really enjoyed the books in this series so far, and look forward to reading more adventures with these characters! I gave this one about a 4.5 rating, rounding up to 5. This story kept me reading, the characters were a delight to read about, and the plot and action were well done and kept moving the story along toward the end. A thrilling read!
