About the Book:
Detective James Cross has been honorably discharged from the Army Criminal Investigation Division due to wounds sustained when an IED blew up near him. Now with the Lake City Police Department, he’s rooming with this good buddy and partner, Cole, while he figures out his family dynamics.
Physician Assistant Lainie Jackson is eighteen months out from an attempted murder perpetrated by her ex, which ended when she managed to grab the weapon and shoot him. When he appears to have survived and is back to finish the job he started, Lainie insists it’s not possible. But someone keeps trying to kill her, and she keeps seeing his face.
Together, Lainie and James must work together to find out who, exactly, is after her and why he wants her dead. And failure is not an option.

My Review:
Double Take by Lynette Eason
Rating: 4/5
Pages: 320
Published: January 9, 2024
Series: Lake City Heroes
I actually intended to read the sequel, since I was given an early copy of that one and just haven’t gotten to read it yet. But since it was the second in the series (as opposed to a much later book) and because as much as it might not seem like it lately, I do still like to at least try to read books and series in order…I’ve just not been great at actually doing that at times, haha.
I’m so glad I did in this case though! Not only were Lainie and James great, and I loved reading their story, but I adored the chance to actually meet their friends in this one, since I know at least some of them will appear and be featured in later books. It’s also honestly been a while since I’ve read a Lynette Eason book, and I was excited at the chance to read some of her newer books.
This one had some interesting twists, and I honestly wasn’t sure what to think at least a half dozen times! It’s not often that a mystery can actually keep me guessing, but this one did! Not only that, but I even second guessed myself a few times, and only figured it out literally just before the twists were being revealed, definitely a rarity for me. And I loved that!
This one was also interesting as I’ve seen a few similar themes and tropes in stalker type mystery plots, but don’t think I’ve ever read one quite like this, and it worked wonderfully in the romantic suspense genre! I loved the building suspense, seeing James and Lainie working through the clues together, and getting to see them with their friends. I’m also really becoming a fan of the ‘friends to more’ thing, and enjoyed seeing that here. Especially after that first night in the hospital! Haha, yeah, that’s one way to walk back into someone’s life. It’s definitely not laughing matter, but I loved how that lead to other important conversations later in the story, and a level of trust early on between the two.
I’m all the more excited to read the next book now! I was excited before, but it’s always a bit more special once you’ve somewhat met the characters ahead of time, so now that I’ve seen them as side-characters, I’m curious to actually read their own story, and look forward to more of this series as well!
