After a tragic loss, private investigator Nona Taylor swore off romantic entanglements and distanced herself from the world. Once a year, on New Year’s Eve, she attends church to beg God for forgiveness, haunted by the guilt of driving her twin sister to her death.

Attorney DeMarcus Johnson is determined to climb the ladder to partnership by winning high-profile cases at his Los Angeles law firm, harnessing his ADHD hyperfocus to excel. He’s everything Nona knows to steer clear of–an overconfident ex-jock willing to do anything for success.

Their worlds collide when Nona’s pastor receives a mysterious letter claiming he’s the sole heir to a substantial estate. Desperate for answers, Nona infiltrates a lavish charity ball, only to be found out by a suspicious stranger–so she latches onto DeMarcus and concocts a fib about being his fiancée.

Now bound by a false engagement, the pair reluctantly join forces to discover the truth about the inheritance. But when an unseen enemy strikes, they realize the stakes are higher than they thought. Can Nona and DeMarcus overcome their differences to keep the pastor safe, secure DeMarcus’s partnership, and preserve a future for themselves?

From the moment I found out about this one I knew The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh was one I wanted to read. I just had a feeling that I would love it, and turns out it’s true! This Romantic Suspense/Legal Thriller is such a good story!

Nona Taylor goes to church only one evening a year, on the memorial of the day she lost her twin. New Year’s Eve. She goes to pray forgiveness for her unforgivable sin, if only this time it actually worked. Yet, something does happen. Her life takes an interesting new turn, and just when she feels like she’s hitting an all-time low, things start looking up. Hope in on the horizon, but is it too much to ask? Too good to be true? Probably, but at this point it’s a chance she’s willing to take. If only the annoying and too-charming-for-his-own-good DeMarcus wasn’t part of the deal.

DeMarcus goes through quite the journey as well. His life seems to be going great, exactly as he’d always dreamed, until a bump in his plans and some unforeseen circumstances threaten to veer everything off-course. His charm and confidence isn’t going to be enough to get him out of this one, but his new found ally and the resulting partnership with Nona might be just the thing, if only she didn’t hate his guts. Princeton, though! How could she resist?

These two! What a hoot. I loved reading this one from the opening pages, and it didn’t take long for it to completely demand my full attention any time I had a chance to sit down and read. How is this only Breigh’s debut? Wow, talk about a stellar start! I can’t wait for more of her stories, and I absolutely adored this one. Plus, Pastor Grant and G’Mama are irresistible, and I loved their mentorship type role in the characters’ lives. This is a ‘trope’ that I love in stories, and thankfully I’ve seen it more embraced lately, but was something more rare in previous years. It’s a trend I’m glad to see becoming more popular in these stories.

Jayna Breigh has given readers a wonderful and inspiring story, that carries themes of faith, healing, and friendship that is sure to please. The Hunted Heir has a little of everything, from a legal thriller with a good dose of suspense, a slow-burn rivals-to-more partnership turn friendship, a bit of genealogy, some emotional challenges and resounding truth. These are just a few of the things that make this one such a fun story. The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh stands up well amongst similar stories while also being a fresh take on the genre. A delightful read and one you won’t want to miss!
