Hello! Welcome back to Books Less Travelled. Today, I’m thrilled to have Kristina Hall back for an author interview. If you’ve been following me for more than a few years, you might remember some of the interviews I included on my previous blog. Kristina Hall was one of those special guests, and it’s been a wonderful privilege to have her here with us today!
Whether you know her for her Suspense or Historical stories, if you’ve read any of her work, you probably know her as a talented and accomplished author. If you haven’t any read her books, I hope today encourages you to go and pick one up.
For those with Kindle Unlimited, many of her stories are also available there too!

Stephanie: What are some of your favorite non-bookish activities?
Kristina: I love spending time with my husband, hanging out with our crazy cat, exercising, and target shooting.
S: Sounds like a good balance to me. (And crazy cats definitely know how to keep life interesting. Haha.)
Stephanie: Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?
Kristina: Everywhere and nowhere. It depends on which mood my brain is in I suppose.
S: That’s fair. I think in some ways we all do a bit of that. Whether it’s for writing and art, decorating, or otherwise, we tend to pull inspiration from everywhere to some degree.
Stephanie: Which of your books do you think was the easiest for you to write? Which one gave you the most problems while writing?
Kristiana: I was able to draft Truth Unshaken, Strangers and Pilgrims, To the Uttermost, Fled for Refuge, and Refuge from the Storm extremely quickly. That’s not to say they didn’t cause their own unique problems, but their first drafts went relatively smoothly.
As far as a book that caused problems … I struggled a lot with Heart of Trust even though I scavenged part of the plot from one of my unpublished stories.
S: It’s always interesting to look back and see how something came together, and this is a good example of that! It’s also important to note that there is a lesson in everything, easy or hard, we learn and grow a little more with each step. 🙂
Stephanie: What type of character(s) are your favorite to write?
Kristina: I really enjoy writing from the first-person perspective. I guess it makes me feel closer to the character. I also love writing characters who are sarcastic. I have an interesting sense of humor, so that part checks out 🙂
S: Haha, those often keep things interesting from the readers perspective too! Never a full moment. 😆
Stephanie: Of the genres you’ve written, does one stand out or come more easily for you?
Kristina: All of my published books so far have contained an element of suspense. I find the action scenes fun and easy to write most of the time. Dystopian also comes pretty easily for me because the world has been providing a lot of inspiration the last few years …
S: Interesting! That makes sense, and it’s definitely starting to feel a bit dystopian out there.
Stephanie: To date, what is your favorite (or most difficult) chapter you have ever written?
Kristina: I’d have to read all my books back to back to answer this question 🙂
S: That’s fair! (I’m honestly not sure why I asked this question?? Haha, sorry about that. 😅)
Stephanie: Do you have a favorite line or quote from one of your books?
Kristina: I’ll stick with my most recent release for this question. One of the lines I like from The Years I Lost is, “I don’t remember choosing to love you all those years ago, but I choose to love you now.”
S: Oh, that’s a good one!
Stephanie: What message do you hope to convey to your readers through your stories?
Kristina: The themes in my books vary, but I hope readers are pointed to Jesus through every book.
S: Well said! Pointing people to Jesus is the most important thing we could ever do. I love that you use your gift as an author to glorify Him. 🙂
Stephanie: What is your favorite part about being an author? What’s an unexpected challenge that comes with being an author?
Kristina: My favorite part of being an author is coming up with a new idea and fleshing it out. The idea is so new and exciting then, and I haven’t experienced any of the hard work yet 🙂
One of the challenges of being an author is balancing writing with the rest of life. I can’t say I’ve mastered that yet!
S: Ooo, yeah that makes sense. I think time-management is an important skill for everyone to learn, but also one that doesn’t seem to come naturally for most of us.
And being excited for a new project is a wonderful thing, but I can also see how being a writer and trying to balance relationships and other commitments in life could sometimes be tricky.
Stephanie: What’s a piece of advice or wisdom that has really stuck with you?
Kristina: At first I struggled to come up with an answer for this one (probably doesn’t reflect well on me as a writer), but the more I thought about it, I remembered something that really shaped my writing. And that is to show instead of tell. Now, there are definitely times when telling is necessary, but a lot of the time, I like to show my readers so they feel like they are there with the characters.
S: Don’t take it too personally, I think this might be one of those questions that many of us draw a blank when asked directly, haha. Even if we normally have plenty of good advice to share, some questions just do that. Your advice here is really good though! That’s one of those rules in writing that just a (somewhat) simple change can make a big impact on the story.
Kristina, I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for joining us here today! I loved having you on Books Less Travelled and getting to read your responses. I hope you had fun, as well. It was a pleasure getting to talk with you and learn a little more about you.
